By Damien Diaz, 2024 Eastie Farm Climate Corps Fellow
When I first joined Climate Corps, I had no idea how much it would impact me, both personally and professionally. From day one, the experience has been nothing short of amazing. Whether it’s learning about coastal resilience, sustainable farming practices, or the science behind environmental preservation, every day brings something new. We’re always heading out to explore green jobs and different environmental topics, picking up insights from the amazing people we get to work with. As Climate Corps Fellows, we’re always hands-on, digging into projects that help to apply what we learn to real-world settings. The entire journey has been more than rewarding and I couldn’t ask for a better team to work with.
Being a part of the Climate Corps isn’t just about learning from books or lectures; it’s about being in marshes, understanding our environment, and seeing the direct impact of what we do. Whether it’s restoring green spaces or improving urban landscapes, every task has taught me something new. The hard work we put in has absolutely paid off, as we’ve not only gained invaluable knowledge but also contributed to something much bigger than ourselves. With all of the data we are constantly collecting, we can make such groundbreaking discoveries that can really impact how society functions as a whole. This experience has truly shaped the way I see our Earth and the role I can play in preserving it.
One of the most unexpected rewards of my time at Climate Corps has been the way it’s deepened my connection with the natural world. It’s one thing to read about environmental issues, but it’s another to feel the earth beneath your feet, witness ecosystems healing, and understand what’s necessary to maintain them. Spending hours in wetlands or urban green spaces, you begin to notice the smallest details—how a particular plant can support the growth of others or how a single part of a marsh can affect the weather for an entire community. This immersive experience has not only made me more knowledgeable but also more passionate about sustainability and the importance of protecting our planet for future generations.
As my time with Climate Corps comes to an end, I realize just how much this experience has shaped my worldview. It’s been more than just a job; it’s been a journey of growth, learning, and discovery. The hands-on work, the bonds I’ve formed with my team, and the impact we’ve made are things I will never forget. I’m excited to take everything I’ve learned and apply it to whatever comes next, knowing that the work we’ve done together will continue to make a difference long after my time here ends. Climate Corps has given me the tools and confidence to continue working towards a more sustainable future, and for that, I am truly grateful.
