Eastie Farm’s Produce for the People Team attended the Massachusetts Food System Forum, hosted by the Massachusetts Food System Collaborative, on December 17th. Hear from Michael Zayas, our food team distribution coordinator, about his experience serving as a panelist and attending the conference.

Attending the 2024 MA Food System Forum was an enriching experience that left me inspired and equipped with a deeper understanding of the complexities and opportunities within our food systems. Set against the backdrop of Massachusetts’ vibrant food culture, the forum brought together farmers, policymakers, researchers, and advocates passionate about building a sustainable and equitable food future.
One of the highlights were the keynote speakers State Senator Jo Comerford and State Representative Natalie Blais who brilliantly articulated the urgent need for systemic change in how we produce and consume food. Their insights underscored the interconnectedness of food systems with climate change, health, and social equity, making it evident that our choices have far-reaching impacts.

I had the opportunity to be a panelist on the climate crisis and climate resilient Massachusetts agriculture. It was a great conversation and it was awesome to be able to connect with other farms who are also having difficulties with growing produce in a state that has been severely impacted by extreme weather events and changing precipitation patterns

Networking was another invaluable facet of the forum. I connected with various stakeholders, from aspiring young farmers to seasoned policy advocates. These conversations sparked ideas and collaborations that could help drive positive change in our communities. It was invigorating to be surrounded by like-minded individuals who are committed to creating a more just food system.

One of the thought-provoking discussions centered around food access and justice. Panelists addressed the challenges faced by marginalized communities and shared successful initiatives aimed at overcoming those barriers. Their passion and commitment inspired me to think critically about my role in advocating for food equity.
As I left the forum, I felt a renewed sense of purpose. The knowledge I gained and the connections I made are stepping stones toward action. Whether it’s supporting local agriculture, advocating for policy changes, or simply being more mindful of my food choices, I realized that everyone has a role to play in transforming our food system.
In summary, the 2024 MA Food System Forum was more than just a conference; it was a catalyst for change. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn, connect, and be inspired by the incredible individuals working towards a sustainable food future. Here’s to continuing the conversation and pushing for a system that nourishes both people and the planet!
