It has been a busy, hands-in-the-dirt kind of summer at Eastie Farm and we love it.
This summer, we welcomed over 500 youth to our sites for hands-on climate and food systems education. Our visitors ranged from age 4 to 24, which means on any given day, you might have a preschooler digging in the soil for worms right next to a young adult exploring geothermal energy in the greenhouse.
At the end of every visit, we ask youth what they learned and what they’re inspired to do next. Here are some of our favorite quotes from the summer:
“I learned that a greenhouse can be so much more than a building.”
“When I eat a banana, I’m going to put the peel in the compost instead of the trash so we can make soil and grow more plants.”
“I learned that you can grow baby carrots!”
We do these visits because we believe youth are the climate leaders our communities need, not just someday in the future but now.
And, of course, no summer at the farm is complete without naming bugs. This year’s undisputed champion: Neymar the Worm, King of the Compost.
